This is a tough one. Why is manual labor bad? My father was a carpenter, as was my grandfather, and those skills that were passed on allowed me to earn money to pay for my education. I think this question has many avenues. A current student at my school has many many discipline

issues. I learned that his current father figure has him working on rehabbing houses so I reached out and we now talk about tips and tricks for carpentry. Buy a lot, build a house, build a neighborhood, hire from that neighborhood, build a community.

You have to understand the context and the times Booker T. operated in. He understood black people can benefit from manual labor in a time where blacks were lynched for pursuing higher education, let alone learning to read.

His focus was engineering, however, his real philosophy was to get training in things that are in demand. He was the original when it came to promoting STEM education.

Some would be torn, seems as though there has been a shift in more recent times to also push young African Americans into either trade schools or College

Booker T was right in my opinion. We definitely need more people trained in things like auto repair, welding, air conditioning/heating, building homes, etc.

I'd say it was appropriate then and now. As an educator, we need people in all walks of life. From the talented tenths to those pulled up by their bootstraps.
