Richard Pryor's act was based on his experiences, many of which were painful. That's the context behind his swearing. Modern comedians do it because he did it, not to help the joke. Anyway, many thought his "Satin Doll" routine in "JoJo Dancer" was a nod to his actual sexuality.

I had never seen this nor did I ever know about his bisexuality. Its not a big deal. Just one of those “well I never knew that or would have guessed that” moments, to me.
