Schools have to start teaching young people basic respect and tolerance. It’s our only way out of this mess.

How the school responds can determine whether or not these bullies continue this behavior. This is a crucial teachable moment. They dropped the ball. This is a learned behavior, it starts in the home, it must be unlearned. What better place than in School!? Teach them something.

For the principal to say she believed the student when they said they meant it as a joke and didn't understand the word is ridiculous they chose that word for a reason they knew what it meant
-
I think the parents need to sue. Show their child this is not ok, and to stop the school district from normalizing or excusing this behavior. They should be made an example of. How could she possibly believe this could be a "joke"? Racism isn't funny. Racial tensions are rising.

Lake Oswego has a history for mistreating POC especially blacks. Growing up the people called it Lake No-negro because of how rare it was to see African Americans over there.

These students need to be expelled, or made to perform community service & attend sensitivity training. Shame on them.
-
Their parents should have to as well.

"they did not connect the word to the meaning." Ha! We're talking middle school, not kindergartners!

Exactly. My 8-year-old knows better.

The principal’s Statement is a classic response to provide cover and soften the backlash against the oppressor, with whom she identifies.
-
A lot of tax
$s being spent trying to figure how not to expel those 3 kids. I’m sure if the victim was the abuser he would have gotten more than a suspension.
