One clarification: the word "librarie" means bookstore in french-- not library. This fact probably makes the journalist's question more problematic since libraries are closing around the world, but it's an important distinction nonetheless.

Stop making excuses for these people, that journalist knew what he was saying, still today France has 14 African countries in their stronghold they studied us (Africans) more than what people think, France still has 3 militaro base in Africa,so yeah he was trying to mock her
-
I don't think you understood my point. Just because I clarified the meaning does not mean I was defending the question, quite the contrary. Nuance is tricky.

/I would hope that at a lit fest, there would be due awareness of the nation that produced Soyinka, Achebe, Emecheta (RIP); what if the question was aimed at the contemporary effects of Facebook, smartphones &c. on novel-reading today? What’s the line between bold&smug/defensive?

/ or it could be snide chauvinism mixed with offensively unabashed ignorance in the face of a talented author-I have no stake in this, but it irks me when ANY author chooses to be obscurantist&glib instead of educating the ignorant, but I suppose it’s her choice-haveta watch vid

I hope she got flamed. 1 ignorant journalist repped all of France when she said that. I wonder how they feel about that?

I was just in Cambodia and while there are a handful of bookstores and campus libraries in cities, the answer as to most of the country as far as a *public lending library system* would be “No,” which does not negate any of
other intellectual assets. Plus:pic.twitter.com/AgPuuK7AUx

Cambodia isn't Nigeria. I must admit that most of the public libraries here don't are not well equipped. The journalist actually asked if there were bookstores and not libraries in Nigeria and yes, we have more than a few bookstores.
-
I recant my statement then absolutely - I couldn’t find the video or hear the original French.I live in Chicago & gaps are many in my Nigeria info but even I have seen photos of crowded bookstalls in Lagos etc.Cambo example only meant that mid-income country can lack lib system
