Curious for your take on a more narrow aspect of Black history: Took a great college course on African American politics that generally started from Reconstruction/Jim Crow, went forward from there to modern times

That's typical. Depends on the title of the course, but I see that often.

Oh I agree, but never start the story during slavery.

Absolutely. Hope that educators who follow you here see this and integrate this into their philosophy towards education and teaching history.

More food for thought: Why call them Egyptian Pharaohs or Egyptian Queens? Isn't Egypt on the continent of Africa too? Why not African King?
-
Why? Because Egyptians are such an important part of our history. That's why

And the goal has been to remove Egypt from Africa and make it European.

I've never thought about that. As a white dude, I've never HAD to either. Anyone got a book or two to start with that I could read?

In a similar vein, why start the history of America with the arrival of Europeans? We skim or ignore pre-Columbian history, and we'd be better served teaching that before we even get to European contact and immigration.

Ivan Van Sertima details the pre Columbus era in a few books. John Henrik Clarke is another teacher.

To remind these young black children they began from meager beginnings. Why would the school system want to teach these young black men & women their truth?

By starting black history with slavery it reinforces the racist narrative of white superiority & black subordination. It's used to support the social construct of white supremacy. It's entirely psychological.

Maybe if we stop selling rights to Pearson. Also, it's absurd that teachers have to follow copyright laws. If it is in our history, it should be accessible for education.
