Kyle is spot on here. My wife is a lifelong educator and suggests two places to start Black history: 1. The beginning. Go back to Africa, thousands of years ago, and work forward. 2. Today. And then work backward. But nah. You NEVER start with slavery. That's a trick.https://twitter.com/kylekuzma/status/952656497644855296 …

Why is the beginning of learning black history for most people start with slavery? Instead of African kings and queens and royalties. I wonder how they teach it the history in Africa.... food for thought

Curious for your take on a more narrow aspect of Black history: Took a great college course on African American politics that generally started from Reconstruction/Jim Crow, went forward from there to modern times

That's typical. Depends on the title of the course, but I see that often.

Pardon the intrusion, Shaun. As a history teacher, I also recommend the storytelling. Dates are secondary to the achievements of individuals. #history #teaching

More food for thought: Why call them Egyptian Pharaohs or Egyptian Queens? Isn't Egypt on the continent of Africa too? Why not African King?

yes, and/but...African legacy need not be kings and queens to deserve an origin story. Some were goats herders and planters.

In a similar vein, why start the history of America with the arrival of Europeans? We skim or ignore pre-Columbian history, and we'd be better served teaching that before we even get to European contact and immigration.

To remind these young black children they began from meager beginnings. Why would the school system want to teach these young black men & women their truth?

By starting black history with slavery it reinforces the racist narrative of white superiority & black subordination. It's used to support the social construct of white supremacy. It's entirely psychological.

Maybe if we stop selling rights to Pearson. Also, it's absurd that teachers have to follow copyright laws. If it is in our history, it should be accessible for education.
