I disagree with this—Hillary Clinton was a much, much weaker candidate than Barack Obama, and she won the popular vote. Any above average Democrat should beat Donald Trump in 2020.https://twitter.com/shaunking/status/950243197707542529 …

Clinton and Trump were both unusually unpopular general election candidates.
-
Agreed. His social media reach alone makes him a historically unique opponent though
-
I don’t think it’s *social* that gave him the win. It was his ability to manipulate the mainstream media into giving him outsized attention for ratings, to trick them into reporting outright falsehoods, to distract them from serious issues

He didn't "beat 17 of them". Lots of votes got split because there were 17 and he was the oddball.

An enormously qualified but disliked candidate who everyone thought was going to win.

There were so many factors to the perfect storm of Trump. Too many candidates on the right. His name recognition. So many who didn’t take it seriously enough soon enough. Racist hatred against Pres. Obama & Trump the most blatant racist on the right. The rise of the tea party.
-
All of these factors have shifted in the last year. I’m pro Oprah, this isn’t against her, but rather there are other factors & 2020 is very far away in the world we are living in today.
-
Kasich is already ramping up to primary Trump in 2020. Who knows what that will look like in 2 years.

If a popular liberal runs under a third party, Trump could definitely win.

Which is why we need new voting methodologies.

He didn’t beat the enormously qualified Democrat (who actually won), and the ‘average republicans’ were the prey of their own party.

Remember, with the help of voter suppression and presumedly some Russian finagling, trump won in a technicality — electoral college. However, more people voted for his rival, who won the pop vote convincingly.
