Southerners don't see the slavery implication, since cotton lifted white as well as black sharecroppers out of the depression. In the South cotton is usually seen as a sign of prosperity & industry. Northern sensibilities seem to see slavery in any agricultural reference.

Whenever I see cotton plants, it's such an emotional response. My mom and her sibs had to pick hundreds of lbs a day as kids to survive.
