Shaun, if you could please pass this along to Erica's family. Many patients who were once "written off" (after brain injury or lack of oxygen) are living today, due to a new assessment of consciousness. http://www.houstonchronicle.com/local/hc-investigations/aliveinside/ …

They told me my hubs had no brain function the first night, they tried to wake him multiple times over multiple days until he was somewhat alert. Today, 10 months later, he is at work and almost completely "normal".

My dad suffered a massive cardiac arrest in May. CPR for over an hour, 4 Minutes Plus without oxygen, and hit more than 20 times with the paddles. They told me that he had no chance of having a neurologically meaningful life and we should let them make him comfortable 1)

We said no and told them to keep trying. He is now fully recovered and in better physical condition than he was before. So yes, miracles do happen!

Thank you for going to see her. We're sick with grief. I hope she makes at least a partial recovery. Her children have lost so much already. They need their mom. We'll miss her voice, but we need to speak truth to power like she did for us. It's Not Over. https://youtu.be/Syln8IkOIqc

Was she not declared "brain dead" then? Was that reporting false?
-
Understand. But brain death is a formal legal declaration with specific criteria to be met and if she did meet those criteria, then the diagnosis is not subjective, it's real. Coma, for example, is nowhere near brain death. Why I'm asking about terminology.

Critical care nurse here...wondering the same thing.

Peds Critical Care doc... had to deal with this situation in many children over the years. Never easy.

It’s the one part of my job that I hate.
