I always find it interesting that PoC are held to an impossible standard of unity above all else. It's actually healthy to have contrasting opinions within the community to encourage critical thinking. Civil discourse is a bedrock of democracy imho.

I don’t object to the critical analysis, or diverging opinions. It’s mainly the grand-standing and name-calling that infruitates me.

“‘If there was one thing that South Carolina feared more than bad Negro government, it was good Negro government’...he recognizes that it was the success of Reconstruction in creating arguably the world’s first social democracy that posed the greatest threat to white supremacy.”

Great read! The politics of Jackson and politics generally were discussed without much attention to institutional structures. Also, the suggestion that a city is radical bc of the politics of its elected mayor isn’t supported by the data.

Also, there have been plenty of local elected officials in the US that have attempted participatory governing modules in low income communities geared toward institutional change. It’s not new in Jackson and the model isn’t limited to “radical politics.”

Love both these men. Brother west speaks from a more dare to say radical inclusiveness while brother Coates issues a personification of the struggle.

Cornell West has lost it. Coates should stop debating this spent force that I think certain many unsavory characters are amplifying. He went off the rails after President Obama’s elections and has only grown more strange over time.
