When I was at a conference for an evangelical denomination I use to be part of, a pastor I respected walked out of a seminar and sat outside. I followed him and asked him why. His response - the "Adam and Steve" joke that was told.

There are evangelicals that do not like the intolerance of the mainstream evangelicals, that do not like much of what mainstream evangelicals hold to. I sympathize with their desire to exit. My personal exit was to atheism, but I understand their desire to keep religion.

For them, it isn't the belief in a deity they object to, it's the politics of the organized religion they object to. And if you look at the teachings of Jesus - he had major issues with the organized religion of his culture and period.
