Yeah, folks saw it as east coast bias. They both deserved it though of course. Source reviews meant a big deal back then, at least to 90s hip hop nerds like me. They used to call it the hip hop bible.

Crazy cause I found a list Source made in 1998 that has chronic as the #32 album of all time and Illmatic is #63.

Wow. I would disagree with that. Both great albums but Illmatic is complete. There are some songs on Chronic that were carried by the rest of the album. Only other COMPLETE album from that era (IMO) is Low End Theory.
