Why call oneself evangelical or Christian to begin with? They're aspirations at most and public verdicts at best. Never boasts.
I'm grateful that @Peter_Wehner, a lifelong Republican and evangelical Christian who served 3 different Republican administrations - wrote this.

I go back and forth on this one daily. I love what being evangelical used to mean to me; I hate what it has become. I'm torn between wanting to distance myself from the term and wanting to reclaim it.

Right! Growing up in the UK, evangelical didn't mean any of the things it's come to mean in the US. I feel like something beautiful is being stolen from me, and I don't know whether to let it go or to hang on fiercely.

My problem with his article is that he takes no responsibility for where the party has gone. He acts as if it was a pure and wonderful institution that recently drifted into the wasteland. 1/2
