This piece mischaracterizes why many folks reject lesser-evil voting. There's a tradeoff between building long-term power & going all in to prevent a worse short-term result. The decision to do either may be rooted in White privilege but also may be rooted in social justice.https://twitter.com/ShaunKing/status/938786971895369728 …

Thanks. My personal view (& why I wrote those pieces) is that more people suffer when we continuously fail to hold Democrats accountable. I think it's a tough tradeoff to evaluate in any given election & may depend on the specifics of the race in question.
-
Do you think "Support the most progressive person in any race -- primary or general" with some exceptions is a pretty safe rule in general?
-
This year, that would have led to Bernie & then Jill Stein, no?
-
(And by "this year," I meant 2016, haha - sorry.)
-
It’s basically been one long year.

But that's not as bad as pushing a candidate who had a lesser chance of winning, and even if they did would only serve a different set of elites. You're preaching at the wrong side. We need better candidates, not excuses why we need to compromise & support 'our monsters'!
-
To my way of thinking this is just throwing the poorest of the poor under the bus because the 'compromise' candidate at least will keep me out from under those wheels (this time anyway.) The poorest of the poor don't care if they sleep on a republican or a Dem sidewalk.
-
The argument that the poor are suffering under Trump, when they wouldn't have under Hillary is so totally bogus. Anyone arguing this way is just using the poor as a proxy for their own fear that they might have to share in some of the suffering.

I think your point of view Sean, that in matters of integrity for some progressives you see it as punishing Dems. That is the blindness that separates us.We may have different values. Different ideals about strategy or that the big picture means more to us than treading water.

No. Trying to shame people to vote for greater evil instead of those who think it's ok to support unsupportable candidates who aren't politically viable costs lives—both when the GOP wins and when the Dem wins ans is a neoliberal/liberal interventionist.
