Correct, that happened in 2015 and was Goodell's call. Also, it was only the league office that was tax exempt, not the NFL. Correct, they were the last pro sports league to have an exempt status but it ended a few years ago.

The NFL, I believe, got that status when the govt came to them asking for players to come out of locker room for the anthem - to promote the military.

They’re not tax exempt. A journalist should know this. The league office (only, never the teams) used to be tax exempt, but they no longer are.
