Or you could only make long distance calls after 7pm or in the weekends because it was too expensive. And sometimes your friends a couple miles away we’re considered long distance because they lived in a diff county or city.

Knowingly making a collect call just to let someone know you have arrived safely and having them decline the call.

This was a common practice in my family. Easy and cheap way to let the parents know we arrived at our destination safely.
