Exactly. I think it's a function of having been a rich, pompous a-hole his entire life. No one tells you no, so you think everything you say and do is great.

He has been told no, which is why he's desperate I think. NY society has told him "no" for years. He's so high school. Begging for attention from the popular kids, desperate for an invitation to the party he'll never attend.

Or even younger. Think of that stage where a child is constantly “Daddy look at me! Mommy look at me! See what I’m doing!” Most grow past that constant demand. The Petty Huckster never did.

Anyone who has had a close relationship with a malignant narcissist knows about the constant need for praise and adulation, the gaslighting, verbal abuse, etc. Such people are soul-killing creatures. To have such a villain as POTUS is an astonishingly unfortunate turn of events.

The term that fits here is "emotional vampire".
