It’s hard to know. Byford has fans and critics. Our system has been messed up in various ways for a long time. It’s hard to pinpoint how much is his fault, how much is politicians and predecessors.

Daniel is being too kind. It is mostly Rob Ford’s fault, to be honest. He set our city back 15 years.

Well, it's also decades of inadequate funding from other levels of govt, and dysfunctional/short-sighted political leadership at City Hall. So it's not all Rob Ford, and certainly not fair to blame Byford too much.

I thought TransitCity was pretty ambitious, but yes, too long term for our short sighted political cycle. Such a tragedy. I totally blame Ford. :P

I almost think we need a transit planner dictatorship: an unelected body beholden to no one, remove it from the electorate/politicians/City Hall's hands entirely.

I think he was very good, but also completely handcuffed by the transit union and city council. Hard to invoke positive change that way.

My take as a TTC user is that Byford was good but completely stuck in politics and bad practices by those around him. Hopefully NY is open to what he can do if they are willing to change.

He came at a really bad time. Toronto was SO behind transit-wise that no matter what he accomplished, it wouldn't be enough.
