It was such a different experience to walk through the exhibits w/someone who had experienced so much of what was documented along its walls

Emmett Till was killed in the town next to his; my granddad’s father didn’t receive benefits of the New Deal that were given to white folks.

He grew up in Mississippi when every day was an existential threat to black ppl. He watched the Civil Rights Movement happen on his doorstep

When we walked past Emmett’s casket, I was struck by the realization that what happened to him so easily could’ve happened to my grandfather

I think about the history of race & racism in this country all the time, but I sometimes forget the impact it’s had on those closest to me.
