Because some wanted to stand and some wanted to take a knee I guess. Tomlin said "they shouldn't have to choose," which was odd. Why not?

This bothered me too. But it means we're entering the next phase of protest: people pointedly remaining neutral always comes first.
-
To expand on this: "We're remaining neutral" is a step in the right direction from "We're pretending this isn't an issue."
-
It's adjacent to "We're in agreement with the protesters," with the caveat of "This isn't entirely up to us because so much $$ is involved."
-
Which is the only thing that stops MOST allies from actually joining the fray: the fear of losing personal, financial, and social stability.
-
So don’t stop being frustrated and angry, but don’t lose hope: there’s reinforcements on the way.

Yeah, in retrospect, it seems like a cop-out on the Teams' part.

Why do we need the national anthem at ball games? I don't get it. Just go out on the field/court/rink and play your game.
