Ironically, Coates makes the point that a focus on race was used to pit poor southern whites against black slaves.

But to resolve the issue the logic of Dems seems to be "more race talk!" Policies should continue to be informed by race...

but it's worth having a discussion about messaging and language. Yes, folks are racist. He spent pages arguing that point successfully.

So why is there a tacit belief that leading with race (as opposed to econ.) in every policy discussion will help us appeal to this group?

No one is saying abandon race. But the "they're racist so vote for us" approach clearly didn't work. So why not "ur poor, so vote with us?"

I think the lack of black support has much more to do with media exposure Clinton's pre-existing visibility in the community.
