The most important story I've written so far in 2017 is up next. A grave injustice is happening right now in New York that must be addressed

Bail is just a guarantee that the person charged will appear in court after arraignment. Innocence nor guilt are factors in that.

Rarely. I'm speaking as a former bail bondsman during college yrs. But yes, the bail decision is up to the judge in arraignment.
-
And I don't know what his bond is, but typically, a bondsman will bail for a % of the total amt. If $250k, likely 10% required on surety.

And that case of the backpack still makes me sob uncontrollably. As a white. It's not a fair system but I'm more than happy to discuss.

His atty must assert his right to a speedy preliminary hearing at the NEXT court date. It's clear that he has previously waived time.
-
He can pull that waiver & demand his preliminary hearing. Then at his arraignment on Indictment (in NY), demand a speedy trial. They must
-
bring him to trial within 60 days. The truth is his PD is probably overworked & Pedro does not know to demand these things.
-
Most laypeople do not. If his atty has not advised him of these things, he can fire the PD & new a new atty.
-
*be appointed a new attorney*
-
And yes, former prosecutor, current def atty here.
-
And if I were licensed in NY, I would go defend him.
-
Not an attorney but I was thinking the same thing. I've worked for a defense attorney and sometimes they just give in because too much work
