I was as jingoistic as the next American until I left the country for the first time. Perspective is everything.

I don't think most even realize they do it. It's the environment we've all grown up in: having rah rah America's the best browbeat into us.

I understand how that happened in the Soviet Union. But what makes the US behave so similarly? This huge fear of being regarded unpatriotic?

That's a question for someone who's studied this more than I have, lol. There is a level of fear in Americans that I haven't seen elsewhere.

"America is the best" is analogous to "my mom is the best"... forgivably subjective b/c it's impossible to experience every country or mom
