If you don't know the story of Iranian Air Flight 655, then you don't fully understand American-Iranian relations. On July 3, 1988 the US Navy used missiles to shoot down an Iranian passenger jet - killing all 290 civilians - including 66 children - on board.pic.twitter.com/Jw3E2YtXBa

If you don't know about Iranian Air Flight 655, then understanding where we are right now might be difficult. In 1988, the US Navy shot down a civilian aircraft, killing all on board.

Shaun, thank you for bringing this up. High majority of Americans know nothing of this event. To this day, America has never took blame or apologized, but has paid the families of the victims. These type of events remain fresh in Iranian minds as well as the ‘53 coup.

To give you a better understanding of the pain this caused Iranians, I visited Hormuz Island a couple years back and backpacked along that island for 8 weeks. Here’s a mural semi close to the port of entry to the island.pic.twitter.com/LY2WssQAax

A reminder that our navy shot down an Iranian airliner full of innocent civilians, while in Iranian waters. The ship’s captain received a medal for this war crime.

290 civilians and it is called an incident One american constructor killed (if true, we can't belief ultra religeous Warhawk @SecPompeo at all) and USA can assassinate a general and start a mess. Beyond disgusting. Send Traitor Trump as hostage to #Iran and start new negotiations

Yes and America gave the captain a medal and never even officially apologized. Years later, America made small payments to the families. I think it was around 200k per person.

I think it wasn’t until 1996. And the US never admitted wrongdoing, just “deep regret”.

We overthrew their government, killed innocent people, destroyed some of their real estate, pillaged their oil with our comrades in the UK and some ask, “Why are they so hostile?” Americans would be hostile too if it happened to them.

From the premise of the continual quoting of the Bible as supreme, could we not expect “Evangelical Christians” to grasp the simple concept of “do unto others as you would have them do unto you” But selective manipulation of the Bible to justify one’s position is the real game.
