Andrew Yang admitting his basic income/“freedom dividend” is all about gutting existing welfare programs, even though I’m pretty sure he tried to claim the opposite when he spoke to @mehdirhasan.https://twitter.com/zei_nabq/status/1139152262767550464 …

It’s important to note what falls under the umbrella of “welfare”. TANF and SSI benefits are funded primarily through federal money but most of the cash for health and public housing comes from state govs. Freedom dividend won’t have as direct of an effect on state programs.
-
This is fact. I know people who get this kind of assistance and it’s at the state level
-
I talk to people on housing assistance almost every day. The programs designed to help Americans in need often do more harm than good. The current bureaucracy disincentivises work and pushes people into positions where they won’t be counted as “unemployed”. Truly a subtle beast.
-
Social worker here with 10 years experience... can you specifically spell out which programs "do more harm than good?"
-
My experience is largely in public housing. Many people I’ve spoken to have had to break their housing contracts due to dire circumstances or have been placed in inadequate housing. I don’t think we can trust political machinations to truly treat people well and with dignity.
-
I've worked administering Medicaid, food stamps (called SNAP now) and IHSS programs. Always treated ppl with dignity. Never heard beneficiaries of safety net programs say they didn't want the services; if anything they'd appreciate more comprehensive, accessible services.
-
But thats the heart of the issue isn’t it? We’d like to provide better care, but we can’t. The welfare state in this country is broken, and the myths surrounding individuals who receive benefits often leads to stigma. I see UBI as the most direct solution.https://twitter.com/parab0lis/status/1139971771690627072?s=21 …
-
Better funding of social safety net programs would provide better care. The U.S. has hundreds of billions of dollars for military adventurism all over the globe...so it's just a matter of political will. Libertarians and small- government folks advance the "stigma" narrative.

He's addressed this.
#Freedomdividend is opt-in. You can keep your current welfare. If you opt in you lose your cash benes but you get NO STRINGS ATTACHED $1K/MO that you can spend however you like BEFORE EARNINGS. Much more freedom no stigma@scottsantenshttps://twitter.com/scottsantens/status/1139599554188316672 …
-
I don't understand why it's so hard for people to discuss this with nuance. Gutting welfare? No. People can choose the $1k/mo or stick with what they have, and certain programs like SNAP and TANF count while Social Security doesn't. UBI > SNAP, TANF, WIC.https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1118932293094187008.html …
-
People receiving public assistance still struggle financially. UBI should supplement public assistance. It shouldn't be either/or, it should be both.
-
It SHOULD be either/or, and the future SHOULD be a growing UBI that starts to channel real wealth borne of automation to everyone. UBI brings greater privacy, no stigma, and more actual freedom. And pegging UBI to the an increasingly autonomous economy will be a REAL revolution.
-
Explain "actual freedom", please.
-
When you are required to certify compliance with government program criteria, to update them on income changes, and when your benefit decreases when you make more, you get less freedom in your daily choices, in addition to limitations on the utility of the benefit imposed by law.

He sure thinks that $1000.00 will do a lot of work. Giving up food and housing for 1k that hustling backwards.
-
Not what he said. Thanks for the falsehoods.
-
If you have to choose then it is one or the other right?
-
Options to choose from 1. True up to $1000 equivalent 2. Keep existing if benefits > $1000 3. $1000 Freedom Dividend instead of current benefits
