My 17 year old daughter, a budding filmmaker who is a huge fan of @Ava, was deeply and forever moved by @WhenTheySeeUs. It made the injustice real to her.
So she went to the New York Public Library today to look at old records and stories on the Central Park Five case.

What my daughter found, with the help of a librarian, when she began searching the New York City newspapers, including the @NYTimes, the @NYPost, and my former home at the @NYDailyNews was absolutely disgusting.
Each newspaper played a role in the public conviction of the boys.
Less than 48 hours after the jogger was assaulted, the front page of the @NYTimes Metro section had a huge headline that said:
"YOUTHS RAPE AND BEAT CENTRAL PARK JOGGER."
They reported it as absolute fact.
They detailed the arrest of the 5.

Has the @NYTimes ever apologized for this?
In article after article they refer to these 5 boys, first and foremost, as fully and completely guilty.

I know we're holding the police and prosecutors accountable for what they did to these five exonerated boys, but THE ENTIRE CITY piled up on them.
Every media outlet (except for @NYAmNews) pronounced them guilty, broke protocols and leaked their names, and so much more.
Has the City of New York every apologized to the Five Exonerated men formerly known as the Central Park Five? They should. A settlement is not an apology. So many complicit parties caused their pain.
All day long, my daughter sent me article after article she found from April of 1989 from the @NYTimes & @NYPost & @NYDailyNews where each paper was absolutely brutal in their depiction and premature conviction of five boys who did not do what each paper said they did.
I honestly think Ava could do a whole other docuseries on the complicity of the New York media in the vilification of those young boys. The national media played their part as well, I remember my grocery store rag mag stands being filled with headlines and I’m from Ohio!

What’s unknown to most people born after 1995 is how much the media controlled thought. Actually they lost the power only relatively recently. Pre social media and camera phones the majority of the MSM in this country (about 90% of it) even the liberal media was very very racist
