What my daughter found, with the help of a librarian, when she began searching the New York City newspapers, including the @NYTimes, the @NYPost, and my former home at the @NYDailyNews was absolutely disgusting.
Each newspaper played a role in the public conviction of the boys.

Less than 48 hours after the jogger was assaulted, the front page of the
@NYTimes Metro section had a huge headline that said: "YOUTHS RAPE AND BEAT CENTRAL PARK JOGGER." They reported it as absolute fact. They detailed the arrest of the 5. Then boldly stated that they did itpic.twitter.com/a1ihbrHlkn

Has the
@NYTimes ever apologized for this? In article after article they refer to these 5 boys, first and foremost, as fully and completely guilty. But they also use dehumanizing, animalistic language, over and over again.pic.twitter.com/E2feV3pAd9

I know we're holding the police and prosecutors accountable for what they did to these five exonerated boys, but THE ENTIRE CITY piled up on them. Every media outlet (except for
@NYAmNews) pronounced them guilty, broke protocols and leaked their names, and so much more.Show this thread -
Has the City of New York every apologized to the Five Exonerated men formerly known as the Central Park Five? They should. A settlement is not an apology. So many complicit parties caused their pain.

All day long, my daughter sent me article after article she found from April of 1989 from the
@NYTimes &@NYPost &@NYDailyNews where each paper was absolutely brutal in their depiction and premature conviction of five boys who did not do what each paper said they did.Show this thread

Since the beginning of time. Newspapers played a MAJOR role in stoking fear and calling for lynchings that lead directly to the
#blackwallstreet race massacre in 1921. archives have been stripped to hide headlines but it remains. -
I was a teenager in a NYC suburb in 1989. The newspapers did everything they could to terrify us with this story. The pack of boys, out wilding. No one was safe from the young black boys. An atrocity.

Huge respect! Honestly there has been nothing more moving and gets my blood boiling more than this series and story. I mean wtaf allows for this to happen for real. I have never wanted a punch bag more than watching this injustice....

Plus, they all did very little to announce their exoneration.

If you watch the 20/20 broadcast on the Central Park 5 they also highlight that out of 250 newspaper articles only 12 used the word “alleged” when referring to these men. I think all the publications should be held liable. No, money isn’t an apology but they deserve it.

Yep, the Ken/Sarah Burns goes into how the media/publication go all in on their “guilt”. Pretty disgusting all the roles people played.

And something I learned from an interview with
@ava - Orange Foolius took out his ad less than TWO weeks after the incident took place. Calling for the death penalty when there hadn't even been a trial.... - 1 more reply
