I know that it seems exciting to see a person of privilege finally sent to the place that hundreds of thousands of us have been sent to across the years. I get that, I do. But Rikers is still a hell hole that nobody should have to go to. Even Paul Manafort.
When a man like Paul Manafort gets sent to jail or prison, it gets real easy to see who actually cares about fair sentencing and prison conditions and who doesn't really care at all. We can't scream for harshness with Manafort - then leniency with our own. Just be consistent.
When we scream for harsher sentencing for our political enemies, just know that when the laws are made for those harsher sentences, that they won't be used on people that look like Paul Manafort. It will be Black & Latino folk, Indigenous folk, and poor people that get those.
Manafort is far more deserving of time at Rikers than the thousands of shoplifters and petty drug dealers who end up there.

Rikers isn't a place you send people if your interest is justice, rehabilitation or reform. Full stop. It isn't a place you should send ANYONE.
I hope advocates of #CloseRikers maintain their clarity of opposition, even for Manafort.
Naw son. The only way a prison like Rikers will close is if guys like Manafort start serving time there. I'm not going to be gleeful about him being sent there, but I won't feel bad either. He probably won't be there long.

If something was done about Rikers when it just has poor people in it this would not be a talking point for either side. It would just be another guy going to another prison.

If anything there will published complaints about the his conditions/treatment drawing more attention to the inhuman conditions the other prison population is forced to live through, maybe this forces its closure.
