I see people excited to see Paul Manafort sent to Rikers Island and put in solitary confinement. 1. Rikers Island should be closed down 2. Solitary confinement should be ended. We must be so principled in our calls for reform that we want them even for our enemies.
I know that it seems exciting to see a person of privilege finally sent to the place that hundreds of thousands of us have been sent to across the years. I get that, I do. But Rikers is still a hell hole that nobody should have to go to. Even Paul Manafort.
When a man like Paul Manafort gets sent to jail or prison, it gets real easy to see who actually cares about fair sentencing and prison conditions and who doesn't really care at all. We can't scream for harshness with Manafort - then leniency with our own. Just be consistent.
When we scream for harsher sentencing for our political enemies, just know that when the laws are made for those harsher sentences, that they won't be used on people that look like Paul Manafort. It will be Black & Latino folk, Indigenous folk, and poor people that get those.
I can’t agree with you this time Shaun. I respect your position, but I just can’t. Yeah Rikers is bad but his privileged ass knew that when he was out committing crimes and not giving a damn about the American people. He ain’t special.

I agree Shaun and we should fight like there is no tomorrow to accomplish that goal, however, since it is still open, he deserves there. He can move out when everyone else does. I think that is a fair compromise, no? Most of the people in Rikers should not be there. Big diff.
But there are people that need to stay there. Those who do crimes like murder or assault need to stay there! We can't slap a Beast on the hand and expect it to behave.
Rikers needs to be shuttered and turned into a park and museum.

Not sure why anyone would think closing Rikers means that whatever replaces it won't also be a hellhole. It's not the physical location but the people and culture running it.

This is as close as we come to guillotines. And yet we are against the death penalty for everyone else. I’m not saying throwing him in there is right, but it sure is satisfying.
I agree; however, considering the recent release of #WhenTheySeeUs (@ava hopefully many have watched and many will continue to watch, learn, and feel empathy and outrage), I think it's ok to feel some measure of joy, if only for the light this shines for those walking in the dark
