I know that it seems exciting to see a person of privilege finally sent to the place that hundreds of thousands of us have been sent to across the years. I get that, I do. But Rikers is still a hell hole that nobody should have to go to. Even Paul Manafort.

When a man like Paul Manafort gets sent to jail or prison, it gets real easy to see who actually cares about fair sentencing and prison conditions and who doesn't really care at all. We can't scream for harshness with Manafort - then leniency with our own. Just be consistent.

When we scream for harsher sentencing for our political enemies, just know that when the laws are made for those harsher sentences, that they won't be used on people that look like Paul Manafort. It will be Black & Latino folk, Indigenous folk, and poor people that get those.

The fact that he's part of a group that has stood in the way of both of those points and now gets to experience them first-hand is cause to celebrate in my book... Doesn't mean we don't still want both of those things to happen...

I’m not screaming for harshness for Manafort; I’m just glad that he’s being treated like any other New York State defendant awaiting trial. Rikers Island does need to go, though. It is an abysmal place with inhumane conditions.
-
Fact: Rikers is a very bad place, should be closed down. Fact: Rikers is still operating, and will be for the foreseeable future. Fact: Manafort committed witness tampering from jail. Conclusion: Manafort should do hard time, not minimum security, or federal country club.
-
At Rikers Island Paul Manafort would prefer solitary confinement over being in general population.

I’m not excited that he’s going to Rikers. I’m excited that he’s facing unpardonable state charges.

I was one of those people. But you're right, and a better man than I am.

I get this. And I agree. But it’s good to see someone of wealth treated as anyone else. If anything, maybe THIS will finally incentivize prison reform?

I'll save my outrage for the brown kids living in hot cars and concentration camps. Thanks.

Exactly, exactly, exactly. It’s only a principle if we stand by it when it is inconvenient.

I hear you, but where was this energy from the general masses when they were doing this to our countless brothers? For decades.
