This quote from @JoeBiden may be the most insightful thing I've ever heard from him on his politics. It's a prophecy for how he got so far - Style over Substance. He'd openly admit that he was a conservative, but knew that he had to sound a certain way.

He obviously didn’t know my grandmother. She’d witnessed illegal abortion, and knew it to be unsafe and evil. She encouraged us to work for abortion rights.
If you were Catholic in the 60’s & 70’s (as I was), it was difficult to be pro choice & practice your faith. Many of my women friends were against abortion back then, but now are pro choice- they evolved.
