Whenever he goes to the well on something like immigration or talks tough about immigrants, I get the feeling that he's got some bad internal polling and he's trying to shore up his base by whipping up the xenophobia. I think he knows he's losing support in the midwest right now.

Notice how all of this immigration talk came out of the blue and with no real policy proposals behind it. Just a bunch of antipathy on an issue that is DOA. I'd bet good money that the tariffs are killing his baseline numbers and he's trying to remind people who he is.
