I grew up on the far South Side of Chicago: Lue, Perry, and Marlon were all dudes I grew up with who never turned 20. Steve and Earnest are also doing life for unrelated murders. We all lived on the same two blocks and I played with them as a kid. Sad.https://twitter.com/flrcld/status/1128702767587921920 …

Now I’m thinking of Lue, Perry, and Marlon. Lue was shot in the head by a gangleader down the street from my house. A track star. The blood from his head and a bit from his brain stained the door where he was shot for weeks until it eventually washed off by rain.

I started walking across the street to avoid the stain on my way to the corner store on 93rd and Cottage Grove but I would always look at it. That blood stained brownish/gray steel door still sticks out as one of my most vivid memories as a kid.

Marlon and Perry were actually brothers. Perry was shot and killed after a fight in Tuley Park with gang affiliated boys over a Miami Dolphins starter jacket and was shot in the back through that jacket.

Marlon was home from his freshman year in college. He stopped by a friend’s place and was shot in a case of mistaken identity, only a couple blocks from where his brother was killed.

I could go on. But the stories of the fates of those young men never leave me. One of the more underrated scenes ever is this jail scene between Kane and his street mentor serving life in prison in “Menace II Society”pic.twitter.com/Ha2Dhc9fc8

Absolutely. Powerful scene.

Replying to @shaunking
“Teach him the way we grew up was bullshit” gets me every time. So many layers in that.
