He chose to sacrifice himself to save his class. He was not forced to do this he choose. He made the ultimate sacrifice to save others. Doesn't make it right but honorable.
I think you’re missing the point of this heroic young man “having to save the lives of others”.

Serious question: Do we run the risk of helping make these school shootings “normal” by celebrating victims as heroes? My fear is that happens by allowing people to take comfort in having a hero to focus on instead of the absolute horror of children being murdered.
No. A dead 18-year-old hero is not normal. Ever. It is the least we can do in calling him a hero, when apparently the least is all we do.

i know, right! it's morally bankrupt and ultimately very unproductive in a practical sense not to value the lives of brown people oversees as much as our own children!
