BREAKING: the DA in Staten Island just asked a judge to set $5,000 bail on a man who took a sandwich and juice because he was hungry, and couldn’t afford to eat. The DA recommended the man serve 6 months in jail. They did this in the name of the “People of New York.”

6 months in Rikers Island at ~$800 per night per person would cost $144,000. Think about how many hungry people that money could help feed.

Shaun — These petit larceny arrests & prosecutions for stealing basic necessities, food, & beverages are common. 6 months is a far longer offer than in Brooklyn. But even a night in jail is a costly injustice. If bodega is closed, it’s charged as burglary. Then longer offers.

so a business should lose profit and perhaps close because this guy didn’t want to go to a shelter or soup kitchen? Sure 6 months in Riker’s is excessive but do you Know how many times he’s done this?

And how many times has going to Rikers and through our criminal legal system failed to stop him from doing it again? Perhaps ensuring everyone, including this person, has their basic needs met would be a better way to prevent it?
