Bernie voted for it because it included the Violence Against Women Act. He stood on the floor for hours demonizing and condemning the crime part, passionately against its racism results Had he voted against it, you'd all say he's sexist. Oh... wait.. that already happens
-
Make a case for Bernie instead of saying your mission is to dismantle another candidate. This is really poor. Every candidate has flaws and this is why it is never an obvious choice otherwise we'd not have these debates. This is clear a great opportunity to make a positive case.
-
I did just make a case based on policy. It's not dismantling another candidate to point out policy differences...

Indeed.
@BernieSanders was on the right side of history. That should count for something! It shows judgment and leadership. -
Talk is cheap when it’s not backed up by action, though, and Bernie ultimately voted for the crime bill.
-
Yes, he did. “I have a number of serious problems with the crime bill, but one part of it that I vigorously support is the Violence Against Women Act,” He warned about the dangers of mass incarceration with the bill. Unlike others, that's not WHY he voted for the bill.
-
Like I said in another tweet, he can call it a “compromise” all he wants, but it doesn’t change a thing for me. Because a minority’s freedom should never be seen as an acceptable compromise. And I say this as a woman who has endured unspeakable violence and appreciates that Act.
-
Sanders spoke out against Dems and Repubs who voted for the bill because of mass incarceration. He voted for another reason. His motives were pure. However, I do understand what you're saying, and I wish he didn't vote for it, especially considering the effect the bill had.
-
I don’t mean to be rude, and I hope that I’m not coming across as such because I appreciate the respectful discourse. It just bothers me that people think that it’s okay that Bernie recognized the dangers inherent in this bill and voted for it anyway.
-
Fair point I understand where you're coming from. I get why he voted for it and appreciate he was one of the few speaking out against the dangers of mass incarceration. HOWEVER, his vote still bothers me - always has. I hope to hear him speak more about it & how to move forward.

But
@SenSanders can claim he saw MLK once and he has a black friend. But decades in Congress WHAT did he do for people of color?? Nada! -
Bernie claimed he marched with Dr King. Is like me going to a Motley Crue concert in 88 and claiming I went on tour with them.

You won the internet!!

On this, we will always disagree for two reasons: The Black community actually supported the
#CrimeBill, not realizing the potential for abuse until it was too late. I don't see why Biden & Clinton can never be forgiven, but Bernie gets a pass after *also* voting for it. -
Have you listened to the footage from the 3 of them, back then, explaining why the supported it? Biden and Hillary shared the view that black men were “super predators that needed to be taken off the streets” and Bernie made clear he was only supporting it for VAWA. That’s why.
-
I honestly don't think Clinton herself specifically meant only black men when she said "super predators", though she should have thought better of it in the Willie Horton era her words had context in. But it's still true that our own community initially embraced the Crime Bill.
