Over the course of a single year in the United States, over 10 million people are incarcerated. TEN MILLION. That’s twice as much as any other nation in the world. At the root of mass incarceration is voter suppression. Always has been.

I'm not sure how I feel about it. Bringing up Dylann Roof is a distraction for sure, but it's also a deflection. There are plenty of people in prison for things that are awful. We can preach about criminal justice reform and also have issues with offenders being able to vote.
-
In a just world, only ACTUAL bad people would be in prison right? Should they have the right to vote? I don't know. I feel like people who are in there AND SHOULD BE THERE, gave up that right for that time. It's more complicated than cherry picking one or two offenders.
-
Truth! Does the system need to be reformed? Yes. With that being said there’s still people in prison that need to be there. For rape, murder, ect. They should be treated like humans and have human rights but shouldn’t have every right like a person on the outside.
-
Are you aware that prisoners are counted in the census at the location they are incarcerated? Are you also advocating to be sure that when the census counts prisoners it counts them at their home address? So as to not take political power from their communities?

Dude, although well intended, your theory that mass incarceration caused by voter suppression is misplaced and erroneous. See Bill Clinton’s and his crime bills from the mid-90’s, ie, the so called 1st blk prez. Racism is the root of mass incarceration aways has been always w/be

Democrats are sinking low and are getting scary as Republicans to get those votes. Letting anyone who is in prison for violence should not be able to vote

If you're male (15th), if you're female (19th), if you're 18 yrs old (26th) the constitution gives you the right to vote. Weird how they hold the 2nd as sacred and handed down by god but the others are only for "good citizens".

I'm not sure how I feel about everyone incarcerated being able to vote. I think maybe everyone who is not serving a life sentence or is on death row should be permitted to vote. People are definitely using the extreme for their argument.

Why don't you work in the places our community is failing? No speaking fees and nice hotels? You wouldn't last 10 minutes in the community you make your living off of.

No, it's illustrative, and takes an argument to its logical conclusion. If you want to defend Roof's right to vote, by all means do so. But the question of whether you would is perfectly fair. You used to be a journalist, Shaun. No one should have to tell you that.

nobody is getting voting rights taken away by how much "you love or hate them." they are forfeited when you decided to violate the law in NUMEROUS ways. you also fail to mention the higher black crime rates which is WHY they are disproportionately incarcerated.

Way to make this about race again, Shaun. You wonder why so many people despise you, and I can assure you it’s because of your Al Sharpton-esque style of racial division & victimization of black people.pic.twitter.com/ORUbAwV9wW
