It's Trump's belief that doubling down on Islamophobia & bigotry is going to help him win in 2020. I understand the calculation. I think it will indeed excite his bigoted base. They love it. But he's misunderstanding why he won in 2016. Nobody understands this more than Bernie
Trump clearly believes that he can fear monger his way to victory. And here's the thing, I think he actually can fear monger his way to victory in about 10 states. That won't win him Michigan. It won't win him Ohio. It won't win him North Carolina. It won't win him Virginia.
Trump is not focused on Ilhan Omar because he has a legitimate grievance with her over 9/11 or anti-Semitism. He doesn't care about either of those things. Trump is desperate for an enemy that plays on the bigotry & sexism & Islamophobia deeply embedded in his base.
But it will precipitate violence. And that is also the point.
