It is sad that you view such a remarkable step as a punishment! Gov't is supposed to protect you that is why you pay taxes so you shouldn't feel threatened at all should the same government passes legislation that bans assault rifles.

Let's be clear though, it is one segment of the US Congress that is beholden to the NRA, gun lobby, and based on some reports foreign powers. Rinse repeat for clean energy, voting rights, and lots of other issues that undermine public good for private gain.
