We’ve endorsed that plan, which now appears to be dead in Albany. But New York politicians who don’t support it should come up with other bold ideas. Supporting the status quo isn’t acceptable here.

It should be entirely based on the merits of testing. This is about empowering students that can handle accelerated and advanced course curriculum.

Terrible idea. Huge variability in education standards across the NYC middle school landscape. Top % in one school would be bottom % of another. You might as well turn SHS into regular neighborhood zone schools. The incoming students make the schools, not the other way around.

I would like to send you the comment I posted on the Stuyvesant High School page last year that comes from my experience going through gifted schools here and in Chicago, that can give you a pretty good view on the situation from the eyes of a black alumnus.
