It’s very easy to take being abel-bodied for granted. Heal well.

I had really painful surgery in December. Had trouble walking (and sitting) for weeks. I learned quickly how unfriendly NYC is for folks with limited mobility. I fell walking up Subway stairs and I had to dodge NYPD cars that parked on the sidewalk. Eye opening indeed.

Not only people with disabilities. Think of paren5s with toddlers or babies and strollers. Its impossible to access the subway

I am sorry to hear that Shaun; my son broke his ankle a few weeks ago and helping him around has opened my eyes as well. Getting him around the city has been challenging, and his school is also not accessible so he's been home. We should all be trying to fix this.

I had this realization when I had an infant and stroller. Even trying to cross the street - often times there's no ramp so if you're in a wheelchair, you're SOL.

Sad. Here in Cali we have disability rights activists who would sue the city for each instance where one of their disabled clients can't access public infrastructure, and as a result most public infrastructure is now obstacle-free for people with disabilities. Too bad not in NYC.

Broke my leg in 2 places, was quickly reminded how much I took for granted, my mobility. Get a cane even if you don’t need it. Keeps ppl at a safe distance. Will discover how much you are bumped and stepped on, on subways. It’s easy to fall, trying to dart out of someone’s way.

Visited NYC for the first time last year from the UK and we were shocked by how bad the infrastructure was, that’s saying something given how bad ours is!

My mother is an amputee & my blood boils when we go places without any thoughtfulness of someone disabled.

Is having chronically non- functional escalators or subway stations without elevators an ADA violation? I understand things break, but the current situation seems illegal to me.

Felt this for the half a year I dealt with horrible plantar fasciitis. I don’t really understand how the MTA could even claim to be ADA compliant?

At least you will heal and no longer have to deal with it. Imagine being born with a need for accessibility. Imagine that same need making you pretty much invisible to much of society. Use your voice to lift that veil. Use your platform to raise awareness and make a change.

Be an #a11y #accessibility is vital.

City that large should have an ADA transition plan. I have helped out with them for smaller cities in my area. Ny state is here: https://www.dot.ny.gov/programs/adamanagement/repository/NYSDOT%20ADA%20TRANSITION%20PLAN%20FINAL.pdf … A lot of it gets tied to roadway projects or redevelopment of a site. Some cities do specific ada projects
