You’re right that good candidates can make a whole field better. A field of good candidates also can produce a nominee that is performing at full potential.
Absolutely. It's necessary. My working theory is that Hillary would've benefited greatly from such a field in 2016. I believe she still would've won, but a competitive primary would've helped her campaign in measurable ways.

If the DNC hadn't decided to confer incumbent status on Hillary in 2016, there would have been a more robust pool of candidates & debates that energized supporters. IMHO the candidate may have been Warren, who is not as much of a competitor in 2020.
