The facts of this case do not warrant jailtime.sometimes an accident is just an accident. There are plenty of examples of inequity in the law. Based on reported facts, this is not one of them.
-
Great it doesnt warrant jail time. Then these same circumstances must not warrant jail time when POC
-
On that, I 100% agree.

Black, Brown, or any color of Muslim, and she'd already be behind bars for some amount of time. *Yes, I'm an old, white dude and I still think I should point this out.

I’m a defense attorney for 20+ years and the system is structurally racist to its core. That said, this is not a case that demonstrates that. This is a 17 year old kid charged with misdemeanor accidental homicide. Very rarely even charged, almost always resolved by probation.
-
I suppose the sentencing varies by state, but I know a young man here in Indiana who spent a year in work release for similar situation. He killed one person, not three.
-
These cases are extremely fact specific. That’s why I hate these “nightly news” takes. My second homicide case ever was a 19 year old mentally retarded young black man charged with Agg. Man slaughter for killing 3 in an accident while being illegally chased by the cops...
-
...We identified 8 mitigating factors and the white judge sentenced him to a one year diversion program that spared him a criminal record...prison would have destroyed that kid. Point is these cases are the worst kind to use as examples of disparity. Drug cases, guns: better ex.

"She’ll also get her license back after a year, pay fines and donate to a foundation centered around combating distracted driving."
Seriously?!?!? -
And only plead to a misdemeanor! Crazy!

No jail time. Probation checkin from college in Texas. License back after a year. How mighty white of the judge.

Thank you! You took the words right off my fingertips! I’m fuming over this injustice right here!!!!!
