Anti semitism is on the rise in the US so it’s extremely unsettling but not surprising to see it rear its ugly head in the OC. I hope that the school district will punish them severely. Expulsion would be nice. Would set an example 4 others thinking of doing the same.Disgusting!

Expulsion is exactly the wrong answer. Do that and you cement the bond they have; validate their misguided sense of us vs. ‘them’. There needs to be consequences, but far more importantly there needs to be education and a breaking down of the cancerous ideas they’ve latched onto.

Always fascinated at the"educate them" argument-as though people are racist because they just don't know it's bad, and if someone just teaches them that, they'll stop being racist.pic.twitter.com/k9cpTRLMqd

Racism is ignorance. Education about what racism encompasses and it’s effect does help.
-
The problem is, ignorance also means *choosing* to ignore what is real, right, and good. They will nod their heads and look sad to get out of trouble, and go on doing this. If it were that easy, we would've wiped out racism a long time ago.
-
Yeah, it's not just a matter of presenting the right information and expecting them to accept it and change their beliefs. The idea that their racist beliefs are correct is ingrained along with the "fact" that a lot of other people will lie to them about "the truth".

Thank you, you said it 1000x better than I did.

Who will hold the parents who taught him this type of hate responsible?!

-
In a perfect world, he would learn from this and then hold his own parents responsible. But in reality? Nobody.

I’m a teacher and I teaching Night by Eli Wiesel right now. I choke up reading passages to my students. How is this happening in 2019?
-
One of the most memorable and eye opening books of my high school career! Unfortunately I don't think enough teachers have this book in their curriculum.
