Bernie’s dad escaped the Holocaust. His family didn’t.

The next year, while Bernie was a baby in Brooklyn, Hitler’s barbarism ravaged Bernie’s entire family -killing aunts, uncles, cousins, children, elders, and more.
But back in Brooklyn, that trauma was endured silently.
9. As Bernie and his brother Larry grew up, all around them, all over their neighborhood, were families with numbers on their arms. Many escaped alone. But it was endured by most, observed by most, in utter silence. Even at home. And Bernie carried this silence through his life.

What has Bernie done in THIS century?
I'll settle for finding out what he did in the 70s and 80s (other than supporting Jesse Jackson's campaigns). This whole claim to "fifty years of service" is an exaggeration when there's a 20 year stretch of relative inactivity.
I'm saying this as a Bernie supporter in 2016: his surrogates would do well to stop leaning on this stuff from the 60s and focus on his record from the 90s through the present.
They don't want to because his record in the 1990s-2000s was full of proudly being tough on crime, which he went after Clinton for last election.
Well, yes, but it's not quite that simple. Bernie and those in the CBC did denounce the destructively punitive aspects of the 1991 and 1994 crime bills, and they at least tried to insert amendments addressing the root causes of crime. Those efforts failed.
I was just reading over some of the floor debates for HR728 (the 1995 LEO block grant bill). It's utterly amazing how damn near every single amendment that tried to increased prevention funding was blocked by the GOP. The 90s. I lived thru it and still can't believe it.
