Teacher should be fired and sued.

That whole school should - that is wrong on so many levels!

And the police officers who arrested him for exercising 1st A rights.
-
I think that’s the most disturbing part for me, 0 reason the cop should have done anything other than laugh at the teacher
-
And told them it was unwarranted and call the parents not traumatize that child.

A real teacher would ask WHY he felt the Pledge of Allegiance was racist. Dig into the details- where did he get this notion? Why does he feel this way? Instead, just take to juvenile detention and punish. WTF??
-
That would involve actual teaching, critical thinking and communication. Things that aren’t a part of today’s education system.
-
Not true—from a woc, that just so happens to be a teacher who encourages higher order thinking & questioning. Part of the problem is all the assumptions & blame game. She was a sub, subs are not trained the same as regular teachers. Most likely she was there for a paycheck.
-
Ma’am, even if yours are a sub, the same standard can apply. I come from a whole family of educators and administrators. Subs can also encourage discussion etc. You still have to have some college education in order to sub, so subs should know about critical thinking.

She's in the wrong profession. You don't argue with middle school kids. They're trying on new ideas, and might change their mind the next day. Perhaps a better answer would be "I will work to make this country a better place for you in your future. I'm so glad you're here." Easy.
-
And even better, what a great moment to have a civics discussion with the whole class. I see this as a missed educational opportunity (aside from the absolute bullshit it resulted in).

That is insane and illegal. My (white) 11-year old daughter quietly refuses to stand for the pledge of allegiance because she thinks our government does not support the rights of all people. The teachers leave her alone.
-
Which is her First Amendment right like ALL students have - says this mom & teacher!
-
Wow-school sure has changed! When I was a kid, pledging allegiance was required and no one ever thought to challenge it. What’s happened to our country when little kids are getting involved in political protest? Are things that much worse than in the 60’s?
-
In 1943 the Supreme Court confirmed in West Virginia State Board of Education vs. Barnette that requiring students to say the pledge of allegiance violated the 1st and 14th amendments.

As a Canadian I'm still confused why they're cops in public schools in America. It sounds crazy.
-
Because it’s SUPPOSED to make the children safe, but it only serves as yet another way to criminalize being black or brown.
