Hi @bariweiss, You are correct when you say, “Perhaps Ms. Omar is sincerely befuddled and not simply deflecting” In all sincerity, it was after my CNN interview that I heard from Jewish orgs. that my use of the word “Hypnotize” and the ugly sentiment it holds was offensive.pic.twitter.com/IxPScaSzGw

This is the first time in my life that I have ever heard that this phrase has historical baggage or meaning.

It’s the same trope drawn on by all the folks obsessed with Soros funding everything and everyone oppositional. It’s the idea that Jews control everything from banking to the weather(!) and can make people do things they otherwise wouldn’t.

It’s the same trope that leads white nationalist to shoot up a synagogue. As leader of a Jewish org and constituent and friend of @IlhanMN, I deeply appreciate this acknowledgment for the power it has to reach and educate our non-Jewish allies to help them avoid using this trope.

For goodness sakes, she took the step to apologize. Good for her. And if it's the first time you have heard the trope that Jewish people have deceptive control over others, then maybe you should open yourself up to learning as well.

It is also instructive that invoking the trope is once again being used to change the subject from oversight of how American tax dollars are being used to support an increasingly nationalist and anti-secular policy in Israel.

No, it's not. Opponents of Israeli policy too often think they can allow antisemitic rhetoric because they can point to some misdeed of Israel (and there are many). Even if I agree entirely with @IlhanMN (I don't) or your take (I don't), antisemitic rhetoric is unacceptable.

We're literally in the middle of a thread where Rep. Omar is explaining her mistake. I suppose I can give you this point, but the eyes of the world are watching to see whether the critique of Israel-Palestine policy is going to shift to the actual merits of the policy.

Yes. And she is in a better position to assert her views on the merits of the policy because of her apology. Not saying I will agree with her, but eliminate bad rhetoric (not just antisemitism) and you have a better argument.

And yes, I know there are some people who will label any criticism of their position as racist/antisemitic/Islamophobic etc. But much of the concern is genuine.

Then what an excellent opportunity to learn about it. Thank you in advance for taking the time to understand why implications that Jews are capable of supernaturally manipulating others into siding with us is dangerous.

Me too. It’s not common. At all. @bariweiss is arguing in bad faith. She is on the hunt for anything from a liberal, especially a Muslim, who challenges the current right-wing government of Israel. @IlhanMN shouldn’t have apologized. It will still be used against her.pic.twitter.com/tNF2i0nWQX
