Why are you apologising? People need to be mindful about what they say. You can’t go doing what she did and expect no come back. Actions have consequences, she’ll do good to remember that. Anyone come for me you better be ready for what’s coming back to you. No excuses.

I agree, this isn’t going to be enough. It’s never enough to those who never wanted it to be. His apology was gracious, but shouldn’t have been necessary. Do not lie on someone, then not expect them to take their own personal integrity with the highest of priority and fervor.
