That's what they are. They've earned that title. I didn't commit a felonious act, therefore I cannot be referred to as such. But they did. That's how it works.

If they've served their time for their crime, gone through probation/parole, they aren't felons. They're citizens who have, in the past, committed felonies. If you think "once a felon, always a felon" then you were against them ever regaining their rights in the first place.
-
Ok, ex-felons. Whats next. Not calling child molesters "child molesters?" What do we call them? I am 100% in favor of ex-felons regaining rights and heading down a path of redemption to become good citizens, but let's not forget what they've done, at least for their victims sake.

How about "citizens"?
-
How do refer to felons when talking about felons earning lost rights?
-
For this week, and this week only, "previously incarcerated" in the press and "ex-cons" in private conversations (like always). After this week, the terminology discussion will be out of the news and moot.

The felon title is not given unfairly or indiscriminately, it is earned.
-
Keep in mind these are the same type of people that deem the words “male” and “female” obsolete

How do we refer to them? "People with prior convictions..." or ??? Not trying to be facetious-- genuinely curious.
-
“Former resident of a state sponsored B&B”

Ya, generally a good idea to avoid nominalized adjectives.

Never cared for the practice of calling people who have served their time as "felons." It's part of the package to ostracize and reroute back into prison.
