Losses in FL, MS, & GA this election season are way more layered/nuanced than most understand. The oppositional organizing on the ground in all of those states grew leaps and bounds. The losses hurt, & were fueled by bigotry & voter suppression, but people are fighting back.
To be clear, White Mississippi elected an open flagrant bigot to the US Senate last night. And did so proudly with the full endorsement of Trump. I see the celebrations right now on white supremacist message boards. They are claiming it as a full victory for their movement.
As a white person who voted in the election last night I will tell you we're not all celebrating. I'm ashamed. And there were minorities voting for Hyde-Smith. Minorities I work with didn't even vote, even after I offered to drive them myself.
Until you live in Mississippi you will NEVER understand it. It's unlike any other state, even in the south.
There was hype for Espy on Twitter but no one was talking about him here. The votes he got were from people who just didn't want her to win, not because anyone was excited about him.
She ran a campaign where she said she was a proud Trump puppet. Unfortunately that's what a lot of people want here. No amount of negative press was enough. Despite her past, she will always vote in favor of Trump's policy and that's all that mattered.
Black voters. Some didn't feel like their vote would count (literally they wouldn't count their ballot) or that Cindy would win regardless so it was pointless.
I called my Senators today & expressed my outrage about Hyde-Smith's racist & hateful comments. I urged them 2 investigate her for spreading hate that could incite racists to come out & cause more harm to people. I demanded that they not allow a white nationalist into the Senate.
Kudos and bravo!!!!! 
Saying things like "White Mississippi" - like I automatically belong to some monolith or voting bloc because of what I am - is the divisive problem. You speak of nuance and act the opposite. For shame, I say. Shame on you.

Both candidates were flawed. I voted against the old way. CHS flipped McDaniel supporters. Espy never stood a chance. I hope that she lives up to her reputation in the worst way possible.
