on iPhone 6s or newer, you can do this by pressing hard anywhere on the keyboard (3D Touch) to do this. on iPhone 5s, 6, SE, and XR, you can use the space bar thing. on iPads, two fingers anywhere on the keyboard

additionally, for the iPhones with 3D Touch, press even harder to select text
